A JOB WELL DONE

Muhondo is the largest and oldest of the Muhondo Coffee Company's three washing stations. Jean Nepomuscene Habyarimana, one of the two managing directors, started as a farmer in 2008 with Coko Farm. Five years later, they bought the Muhondo washing station. Muhondo is located in the Gakenke district in the northern region of Rwanda. The climatic and soil conditions are ideal for coffee cultivation. The coffee receives sufficient rainfall in the months from October to May, grows slowly and thus displays a very special flavor profile and body.

In recent years, more and more small farmers in the Muhondo region have invested in coffee. The income generated allows them to solve many of their problems, such as paying for their children's education, health insurance and care for their families. In addition to creating many jobs in this region, Muhondo truly cares about its people. Farmers not only receive logistical support, seedlings, water supply and fertilizer, they also receive valuable training in farming practices and can apply for loans.

This is already the second time we have visited Wellars Karangwa, manager of the Muhondo washing station. We have been impressed by the processes and the excellent quality of the coffees. The Muhondo washing station is one of the few in the country that uses drying racks.

Divided into three racks each, the beans dry slowly and are protected from direct sunlight and rain.Through the two open sides, the wind can blow fresh air over the coffee and dry it gently.

In 2014, Muhondo won first place in the Cup of Excellence, a concruso that awards the best coffees in the country. In addition, this year they plan to submit some qualities to this competition.

The Muhondo washing station is located in the northern region of the Gakenke district, at an altitude of 1900 meters. In this region there is sufficient rainfall, especially in the months from October to May, which results in the coffee growing more slowly and thus developing its special aroma and body. For the natural process, the cherries are harvested and placed in floating tanks and then dried in direct sunlight for 30 to 40 days.

The surrounding mountains are covered with coffee trees and houses of local farmers who bring their cherries to the washing station on foot or by bicycle. In addition to creating many jobs in this region, Muhondo really cares about its people. Farmers not only receive support in terms of logistics, seedlings, water supply and fertilizer, they also receive valuable training in farming practices and can apply for loans.

RWANDA, A SPECIAL TERROIR

Despite its turbulent history, Rwanda is today one of the world's favorite specialty coffee destinations, and for good reason! Our sister company in Rwanda does an incredible job of bringing the best that Rwanda has to offer to roasters around the world.German missionaries and settlers brought coffee to Rwanda in the early 20th century. The Belgian colonial government established large-scale coffee production in the 1930s and 1940s.Production continued after the departure of the Belgian settlers. By 1970, coffee had become Rwanda's largest export and accounted for 70% of total export earnings.Coffee was considered so valuable that, as of 1973, it was illegal to uproot coffee trees from the land.

Between 1989 and 1993, the breakdown of the International Coffee Agreement (ICA) caused the world price to plummet. The Rwandan government and economy were hit hard by low world coffee prices. The 1994 genocide and its aftermath caused a total collapse of coffee exports and vital USD revenues, but the incredible resilience of the Rwandan people is evident in the way the economy and stability have since recovered.

Modern Rwanda is considered one of the most stable countries in the region; since 2003, its economy has grown by 7-8% annually and coffee production has played a key role in this economic growth.
