PEOPLE FROM FARM TO CUP
Migoti Coffee was founded by Pontien Ntunzwenimana and Dan Brose, two Burundi-born engineers in the community where Pontien was born and raised.
Together they have built two established washing stations nestled among the mountains of the rural province of Bujumbura. These washing stations support 1,236 smallholder farmers in the region who bring their coffee cherries for Migoti to process.
Omwani, the importer of the green coffee we roast, has been working with Migoti since 2020, and we have incredible respect for the way Migoti and Migoti continue to build their operations. Not only are they professional and well organized, but they are also open and honest with information, not to mention dedicated to supporting and improving the lives of the farmers they work with.
Beyond operations, Migoti has taken the step of introducing a microfinance program for its farmers, an initiative that allows them to access modest loans for household goods or agricultural tools.
By offering this financial assistance, Migoti enables farmers to use their income for everyday needs such as food and clothing.
The Migoti team has organized and recorded the coffee delivered by each farmer, information that allows Migoti to make decisions about how much to lend and lend and what to expect in return. in return.
COFFEE IN BURUNDI
Burundi has long been overlooked in comparison to neighboring East African specialty coffee producing powerhouses. For us, however, the Burundi season is one of the highlights of the annual coffee calendar. The country's coffee is produced almost entirely by smallholder farmers, and much of this small-scale production is of exceptional quality. With its super-sweet, clean and often floral coffees, Burundi is putting itself more and more on the specialty coffee map every year.
Coffee is of paramount importance to families and the country as a whole. With this in mind, improving and expanding the coffee infrastructure is not just a way to improve incomes, it is a way to revolutionize the earning potential of an entire nation.
The construction of washing stations and the expansion of agricultural extension work can be excellent ways to improve coffee quality. Washing stations are critical to improving the cup profile and global reputation of Burundian coffee.
Burundi's coffee industry is driven by both the public and private sectors, which play a key role as both washing station management companies and as an exporter.
