SPECIALTY COFFEE from INDIA Ratnagiri
The Hindi word 'Ratnagiri' literally translates as 'Pearl Mountain', a reference to the dense canopy of silver oak that crowns this farm. Ratnagiri was established in 1920, owned and operated by Ashok Patre, having been handed down from grandfather to father to son. This single variety microlot (Selection 9) has been processed by the honey method and is dried on raised beds for 16-20 days.
Ashok Patre is a progressive, well-traveled and resourceful person. He has been inspired elsewhere to go beyond the limits of traditional Indian coffee cultivation and processing, where for example, Brix levels are tested before harvest.
For all intents and purposes, Ratnagiri Estate is an organic/biodynamic farm and maintains official Rainforest Alliance Certification. Quarterly soil tests and organic soil amendments are applied. Ionized seawater and seaweed extract are also applied to improve plant immunity and fruit sugar levels.
The farm is in a lush, shaded environment with 3 types of shade. It is home to over 48 recorded populations of birds, monkeys, leopards, wild boars, tigers, mongooses and occasionally elephants. The rich biodiversity demands that Ashok and his family adopt an agricultural approach that places ecology and harmony with the environment at the forefront. This is a world-class farm, truly one of India's premier farms.
