SPECIALTY COFFEE from BURUNDI Giku (Honey)
This coffee comes from Giku Hill, a coffee-growing hill located in the Butanyerera province of Burundi, and is processed at the Ninga Washing Station, a relatively new washing station within the Long Miles Coffee project. In this remote part of the country, coffee is much more than a crop: it is an essential part of life for hundreds of families who depend on it for their livelihood. In the 2025 harvest, 742 small-scale farmers delivered their cherries to this washing station.
Ninga was built in 2019, about 10 km from the Bukeye station, after it was discovered that many farmers in the region had to travel long distances to find washing stations with fair scales and transparent payments for their cherries. Located at an altitude of approximately 1,900 meters and surrounded by the Nkokoma River, the station allows local producers to process their coffee closer to home, strengthening the local economy and improving the traceability of their batches.
The region is extremely isolated. Reaching Giku Hill requires traveling over 15 kilometers on dirt roads, crossing rivers, and traversing provincial borders. Although small rivers crisscross the landscape, access to clean water and electricity remains limited for many communities. Even so, the hills are covered in coffee plants that grow around the roads, fields, and farmers' mud-brick houses.
Over the years, conflicts that have plagued the country have sometimes forced many farmers to temporarily abandon their land. When they returned, they found their coffee plants waiting for them, and little by little, they rebuilt their plots. Despite this complex history, the Ninga hills have produced elegant and complex coffees since their first harvests, renowned for their clarity and structure in the cup.
The coffee plants in this region are primarily Bourbon, grown at around 1700 meters above sea level, and processed at the washing station using various methods, with the washed process being the one that seeks to highlight the purity and character of the origin.
A coffee that reflects both the resilience of Burundi's coffee-growing communities and the extraordinary potential of these hills.
