SPECIALTY COFFEE from GUATEMALA Entre Volcanes

Entre Volcanes is a special project that began in 1990 and focused on supporting small local specialty coffee producers in Guatemala. The program includes around 500 small producers and was developed by the Falla Family. It is now managed and collaboratively supported by San Miguel Mill.

The Falla family and the San Miguel company decided to support small producers from the beginning, who also have a history of producing coffee. This means they know the challenges that Guatemalan coffee producers face on a daily basis.

Entre Volcanes coffee includes two varieties, Bourbon and Caturra. The coffee plants grow under the shade of Grevillea trees at an altitude of between 1500 and 1700 meters above sea level, and the cherries are harvested from November to April. After the producers take the cherries to the Molino San Miguel, they are processed on site. The process includes washing and fermentation for about 18 hours. The coffee is then dried in patios and using mechanical dryers. The final product is wonderful coffee beans.

Small producers in Central America often face the obstacle of low prices and labor exploitation and we are proud to be part of the Entre Volcanes program.

“This program has been supported by roasters around the world, who are committed to supporting sustainable business models while achieving quality in the most consistent way, year after year. “ – San Miguel Team

As the name of the project indicates, the coffee plantation is close to the infamous Ruiz volcano. The beauty of the volcano and the nature that surrounds it is undeniable. The Entre Volcanes program aims to create a sustainable business model that supports the maintenance of the environment and the production of high-quality coffee.
