SPECIALTY COFFEE from KENYA Thungury

The Thunguri wet mill is part of the Rumukia Farmers Cooperative Society Ltd. in Mukurweini (Nyeri) in the highlands of central Kenya. Thunguri processes cherries from 425 small local farmers who farm on small plots of just half an acre of land on average, at altitudes up to 1850m.

Nyeri County has cool temperatures and fertile highlands, situated between the eastern base of the Aberdare (Nyandarua) Range, which forms part of the eastern end of the Great Rift Valley, and the western slopes of Mount Kenya. The town of Nyeri (county seat) acts as a destination for those who visit Aberdare National Park and Mount Kenya.

The combination of fertile soil, seasonal rainfall, and high altitude provide the ideal climate for coffees characterized by high acidity, full body, and ripe fruit flavors. Due to the cool temperatures at altitude, particularly at night, Nyeri coffees tend to develop and mature slowly producing very dense, hard beans with high acidity and complexity.

The coffee is wet processed, where the fully ripe cherries are:

• Pulped

• Fermented for 24-36 hours (depending on weather conditions)

• Washed

• Slowly dried for 2-3 weeks on African beds until moisture content is reduced to 10-12%.

The coffee is then processed at the Othaya dry mill, where it rests on parchment for 3 weeks before being dehulled, cleaned and sorted by bean size. Finally, the coffee is carefully selected by hand before being packed at GrainPro for export from Mombasa.
